Pakistan’s fragile democracy is at a crossroads.

Pakistan’s fragile democracy is at a crossroads.

History repeated itself this week when Pakistan’s most popular party leader, Imran Khan survived an assassination attempt.

In his speech after the attack, Former Prime Minister Imran khan accused Prime Minister shahbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Rana sanullah and an important officer of Pakistan’s spy agency of orchestrating the attack on him.

ISPR today, in a press release, rejected the claims made by the PTI chairman and asked the incumbent government of Shahbaz Sharif to initiate action against the PTI leadership for accusing without evidence.

On the other hand, the PTI leadership in Lahore is trying to register an FIR against the people who are accused by the PTI chairman. The PTI leadership has been unable to register an FIR so far, although the government in Punjab is of the PTI, and Pervaiz Ellahi is the chief minister, an ally of the PTI government in Punjab.

Tensions between the PTI and the establishment are on the rise, and many fear they will escalate further once Imran Khan resumes his long march towards Islamabad. Imran Khan is on bed rest after taking four bullets in his legs. Though his health is out of danger, doctors are advising him to rest for a week before he resumes the march towards Islamabad.

Imran Khan, in his speech, asked the Chief of the Army Staff to take action against the people who the PTI chairman accused of targeting Azam Swati and others.

Khan wants his followers to continue protests across the country. Army stands behind their officer accused by the Chairman PTI. Political analysts are warning of dangerous times. Mr. Khan said that the conspirators planned a killing on the same lines and using the same tactics that were used in the killing of the former Punjab Governor Salman Taseer, using religion and religious fanaticism as a cover in the killing plot.

Rana Sanullah said earlier in a press conference that initial government findings suggest that religious extremism is behind the attack on the PTI chief.

Today, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif announced a full court commission that will investigate the attempt on the PTI Chief’s life and the accusations made by Mr. Khan.

The PM demanded the formation of a full court that comprises the top judges of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. The Commission can call anyone for questioning. The PM said that he will appear before the commission if he is asked to do so.

The General Secretary of the PTI, Asad Umar, has already requested the Supreme Court intervene to end the current political crisis.

Both the government and opposition are looking to the Supreme Court to intervene.

Prominent analysts and political pundits believe that the coming days are vital and dangerous for the democracy in Pakistan.
